1995 Evinrude won't accelerate in reverse

I have a 95 Kenner with a 95 Evinrude 115 and a top mount controller. It does everything perfect in forward but only engages reverse but won't accelerate. It works perfectly each way on the throttle but not when in gear. I just bought the boat so really don't know the history. Any advice? Motor runs fantastic otherwise and can't see anything binding up at the linkage on the motor and can't tell on the shift control linkage. Am I correct that the throttle is not supposed to travel as far in reverse as it does in forward? I'm lost, HELP!

Yes i thinkyou are right but it should travel some distance to rev the motor up.
If its going ok in forward then have a look what happens in reverse, is the throttle cable not moving? sounds like it, you will need to open up the control box if thats the case

Pull your control apart and check that the shift cable is in the inner hole closest to the pivot point. There are two holes in the arm.
