Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum although I have used it as a source for multiple repairs through the years. I have a 95 Force 40 HP 2 stroke, 2 cylinder on my pontoon. I bought it in-op and the previous owner said it wouldn't start, very little history on it but it was a great deal. So, we've found that if we disconnect the trigger from the throttle linkage and move it all the way to the stop (counter-clockwise) while turning the motor over that it will fire and start after what is usually several attempts. Once it's running, I replace the screw/trigger into the linkage and it runs ok but has difficulty idling. Once i turn it off, I have to repeat the process to start it again. I've replaced the switchbox, and both the coils and plugs at this point. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Hi,
Sounds to me like your timing hardware has slipped out of position somewhere.
I would:
1. Pull the flywheel and check for a shift in its timing position. I think the top of that drive shaft is splined. The flywheel may be indexed wrong from previous service (?).
2.. Be sure the stator assembly is indexed and mounted firmly.
3. Anything cracked? Stator or trigger?
Let us know.

Ok so I think I got it figured out. The flywheel was keyed so there wasn't much I could do about that. The trigger and stator seemed appropriate as far as integrity of units and wires. My FIL brought a timing light over and turns out it was significantly out of time. After disconnecting the tower from the trigger and carb I adjusted the trigger/ timing until the mark on the flywheel (appeared to be 34 degrees) lined up with the timing mark on the front of the motor and then adjusted the turn buckles and set screw to fit back onto the tower. Subsequently, I had to make some other slight adjustments on the tower and took a lot of the play out of it. Viola! I'm going to test it again tomorrow and then hopefully get on the water Saturday!
