I have a 1995 Mercury Force 40, OE108215, that started sneezing recently. I found a big hole in a hose going to the fuel pump from the engine block. The hose is about 3/8" OD, about 6" long and connects through right angle plastic fittings at each end. The plastic fitting at the block end was mostly gone, too. I suspect there was something that melted the fitting and burned or blew a hole in the hose. I replaced the hose with regular fuel line hose and the plastic fitting with a brass fitting from an automotive shop (It was late Sunday afternoon). It is back to running well again.

I have three questions:

1. Any idea what might have caused this?

2. Is it acceptable to leave the brass fitting installed?

3. If the brass fitting is not acceptable, any idea where I can order the correct plastic part?

Thanks,

FAL

Re: 1995 Force 40

question #1, don't know.
question #2, don't know.
question #3, try here:
http://www.mercurypartsexpress.com/...ection/ServiceParts/PartSelectionframeSet.asp

You will need to enter ser. number, then zip code, select recirculation system from the drop down menu. Looks like it may be part 5 in the diagram. Part number 22-99664 2 , $1.35.

You might as well order a few more things since you are paying for shipping anyways.
Maybe a new impeller, or plugs, or lower unit fill/drain screw washers. Or a fuel pump diaphram, or thermostat, or gas filter.

roscoe:

Thanks for the info on finding the parts. You were correct on the part I need, so I will replace the brass part with the plastic part and that won't be an issue any more.

Still would like to know why the hose had a hole blown in it and the fitting melted. Maybe someone has an idea...

Thanks, again!

Just a thought, it would have to get awfully darn hot to melt that fitting. If you haven't overheated the engine, maybe a solvent of chemical of some kind was spilled on it?
