1995 Force 40hp - testing CD module

I've got a 1995 or possibly 1996 Force 40hp. I'm not getting spark out of the top CD module. The bottom one is firing like a champ, but nothing out of the top. I've swapped cables to make sure that wasn't the problem. I've even swapped plugs.

What is the best way to test whether the problem is the CD mod, or the stator? Can I put a volt meter to it?

Bear in mind that I'm a rookie at motor repair.

Welcome to iboats shutterbug.

A 1995 40 hp has a single switchbox and coils ignition. (no CD modules)

A 1996 40 hp has a cdm ignition which is enclosed in the coils. (no CD modules)

So, not sure what you have.

If you swap out what you are referencing as a cd module with the other one, does the problem stay with the suspect part?

Hava a serial number to verify the year?

Or a photo of the ignition?

Switchbox = CD module .

your test proceedure is to swop the wires from input to input ...if the problem stays with the same cylinder then the switchbox is ok and its the triggering/stator coil ...put a voltmeter across the input to the switch box ( from stator ) manual gives exact figure but you will have 150 -300v if coil ok. trigger coil will also give a small AC voltage

No, switchbox does not equal, they share the same function in the end, but use different technology, and most important - have different wire color codes. And if the ignition has been modified or is using non factory replacement parts, it could be much different.


Need to know what he has before you can instruct which wires to swap and test.

Referencing a "manual" doesn't help much if he doesn't have one. If he did have one, he wouldn't need to ask here.
