1995 Force 90hp starting problem

I'm sure the answer to this issue is on here somewhere, but all the thread titles are something like "19XX Force XXhp problem." that makes it a little hard to filter out.

My force is often a little slow to start (2-4 weeks between uses). It always starts, though. I run it out of fuel after each use. Once it is running, though, it is immediate start over the time I'm using it daily. Or it was........

Hence my issue now. The motor has begun to balk on restarts. If I restart it, bump it in reverse to set the trolling plate, then shift to drive (stopping at neutral on the way), it cuts out and becomes a bear to start. At one point I changed the fuel filter and it started back up. Spark plugs are brand new.

I also had a problem at the dock when coming in. I shut it off, planning to get a little more gas and going back out. Wouldn't start after sitting about 10 minutes. Ran the battery down trying to start it. Even tried jumping it with the truck. Just wouldn't start.

Got it back home, after ~1.5 hours I turned the key just for kicks. Started right up.

Could I have vapor lock problems?
Flooding? I don't use the choke on restarts (normally), though I did after it wouldn't start.
Could I have just gotten bad fuel? There was just a little water in the fuel filter.

Any clues would be appreciated. Are there any online service manuals available?

Sometimes my motor sets for 1 week and then 6-8 weeks.
Need to follow the start up procedures.
First, I NEVER ever run the carbs out of gas.
It can cause starvation in the upper cylinders and can cause piston scoring and damage.
The top carb runs out of gas before the lower ones.
Then the top cylinders are running dry.
You never get all the gas out anyway and what's left dries out faster and leaves gunk behind.
If it's gonna set for long periods?? Use stabil in the gas.Then use Ethanol treatment too.

To make sure "everythings" as it should be do a compression test.
Sometimes a Force/Chrysler that is used for slow trolling can build up a bit of carbon.
I used to fish the bay when I lived there(Mi.)
I did a lot of slow trolling and once in a while did a De-carb
I used Mercury's Powertune or OMC Engine Tuner.
Seafoam doesn't do the job everyone says it does.
Follow the directions.
I even let it set in the motor(tilted up) for 2-3 days.
That's after the motors gotten warm.
Then Make sure the enricher is working correctly.
If there is a small hole in the bellows it can cause had starting.
Even though you use it for slow trolling, the rpms still should be at the least 750-775 in gear. 750-800 is the recomended.
Change the fuel lines,filters and fuel pump diaphragm.
What's the compression? They need to be within 5# of each other.
Then is the battery/starter spinning it fast enough?
Load test the battery and then clean the starter(easy job)
Make sure the connections are all tight.

I had a problem with my motor starting/keep running on another thread, and along with what Jerry has suggested, which are great, maybe you can pick something up from my thread that may help. The starting procedure is more important than I thought.

I just went through something very similar this weekend. What it ended up being is the fuel line that goes from the fuel pump to the first carb was starting to pinch off at the first carb. After I straightened it out, it ran like a gem. I don't know if this is your problem, but would be worth a look (the symptoms you describe are exactly what I had). Good luck.

Turns out this was a simple case of a part failure. The Low speed stator failed.
