I have a 1995 Sylvan with an omc Johnson SPL

The voltage meter is spiked all the time.

I've done some reading on the 115 Johnson and for those it suggests a voltage regulator.but I know the SPL was a bargain motor. Does it have one? Can a schlep replace it? How do I test it? How do I find it? Does running my boat this way hurt anything?

The tach is stuck. The gas gauge doesn't work. And the voltmeter is off the rating.

Help!

Check the BRP website with your model number, it seems some have regulators & some don't.

I've seen 18 Volts on an unregulated system with a fully charged smallish battery not causing any problems.

You are correct. The 88 models were a cheapened version of the 90 hp engine. As such, it did not use the expensive combination rectifier/regulator. Yours used the cheaper rectifier only. Part # 583408. Around $50. The voltages Fed mentioned are common on this unregulated electrical system.

Its a 112, not 90. Does this make a difference (though I've seen the 90's and they seem to use the same block).

The thing that worries me is that its off the scale (past 18volts) and the gauges stopped working. Once, the engine refused to quit when I turned the key off (though this hasn't happened since). Am I frying things?

Oh, one more data point. This just happened started happening all at once. It used to run between 13 and 15 volts.

Are these all red herrings?

Have you checked your battery cable connections on both the battery and the mtr ??

I put in my serial number, and it does show a rectifier/regulator (#69); *and* a rectifier (#66)

Could it have both? Or is this just a 'general' list of everything that could be hung on this block?

Could just a failed rectifier cause these voltage spikes?

Does someone have a wiring diagram or picture for this motor to show me where this stuff is? I've found the rectifier, and it would seem simple to replace...
