I have a 1995 Johnson 150 ocean runner that was running great and suddenly lost power and eventually stalled out. Hard to restart and would never get back to full power load or no load. Ran compression check and have 90psi on all six cylinders. Ran spark test with a tester and found spark erratic on top four cylinders and no spark at all on the two lower clylinders. Any idea what is going on? Thanks.

No expert here but I looked in my manual for you sounds like a power pack problem or coils, likely the power pack. Get a OEM manual it is as important as fuel itself. It has testing procedures for your issue. Good luck.

I have the same motor(s). Sounds like power pack. CDI sounds like an excellent repacement pack. There not cheap so it pays to troubleshoot the problem.

Thanks everyone for your input. I'm leaning toward the power pack and coils but, knowing the expense, wanted to troubleshoot. The stator test requires a peak reading voltmeter, and Packard test connector (possibly a stevens load adapter for the power pack). I have a digital multi-tester and am not sure if that will work in place of a PRV. Also, do I need the other items or is there another way to test? Thanks again for the input.

Thanks again for the help. What about the Packard connector? Is that also required to do the test?

No just stick your straight probes down the back of the packard connector, they aren't sealed on the back. Its no problem getting a reading.

Thanks everyone for the great input. Turns out it was the powerpack. Replaced it with a new CDI powerpack and motor runs great once more. Not sure what top rpms is on the motor but now wants to go to 6000+ rpms.(If tach is correct). Anyone know top rpms for 1995 johnson 150 looper?

Power rated @ 5000 RPM. Full throttle operating range 4500 - 5500 RPM. Power pack RPM limit 6100 RPM. From the OMC manual. I love this book.

Take a look at the literature for the CDI pack, I think they are programmable for different rpm ranges.
