Recently when running I lost RPM's. I hobbled the boat in and tested the compression - good on all 6 cyl's. Tested the spark and found none on lower two cyl on port side. Tested the coils and they are ok. My questions is: Is it more likely a failure of the power pack or trigger base (sensor coil)? What are the chances of both?

Check grounds for power packs first, clean corrosion if bad. Check voltage from stator coils to packs to be within specs, see manual. Swap packs around, if the problem moves to another pair of cylinders the pack went bad.

If your trigger caused the problem, swapping packs around may kill another one. You could take the chance, packs do go bad with age and heat. Those power packs are around $140 or so apiece. They may all be breaking down with age, I would keep replacements on hand.

EDIT: Sorry only one power pack on that motor, so swapping is a no go. A new one is more like $250-$300.

Motor only has one pack and highly likely its the pack....I would test the timer base by downloading CDI's testing manual before buying anything yet.

Thanks for the responses! I am having someone run some tests on it tomorrow. I too feel it is probably the pack - unless I get lucky with the ground.

Was the pack the problem? PM me if you need one, I might have a good used one on the shelf, I'll give it to you if I do.
