I recently purchased my first boat with a 95 Johnson 30hp (J30ELEOB) on it. When it is in idle/lower rpm it sputters/back fires but seems to run fine when I start to put in some throttle. My first thought is a carb issue but my knowledge on outboards is limited and wanted to get some thoughts from some experienced outboard folks. Below is a link to youtube with a short video of the engine running. Thanks in advance for any info.

Ok thanks flyingscott, that sounds simple enough. Would that be a 1/4 turn left, right or just have to feel it out? Will this adjustment also take care of the high idle issue?

Lefty loosey- rightey tightey- left will richen it up- right will lean it out. Do not crank it down tight you only want lightly seated if you have to go that way. As far as the high idle look on the front of the tiller if there is a knob sticking out loosen it up. That is a speed adjustment knob and people play with them

Ok thanks for the info. My motor has remote controls not a tiller handle. Do you know if that speed adjustment knob is near the throttle lever or would it be underneath the cowl on the motor?
