Hello All. I am down at my shop with a new impeller in hand and can't figure out how to drop the gear case. I have the manual and the first thing to do is disconnect the shift rod and I can't figure out how and where to disconnect it. Any advise would be great. Model J40ELEO. Thanks, Rick.

Never did figure it out but spent the day working on downrigger mounts and rod holders. I'm going to hate myself if my impeller fails. Still could use some advise. Do I have to remove some stuff in order to see it? Thanks, Rick.

Directly under the carbs is your linkage.

If it is like the 60hp on the starboard side of the motor is is the shift linkage.
You have to disconnect the long shift arm from front and back mounts and pull the coter key from the linkage. Then you will be able to push the link about 3/4 of inch to the port side of the motor and it slide out of the shifting bar. then undo the 7 bolts on the lower unit.

O.K. Are you saying the entire shift rod from the power head down comes out as you drop the lower unit? The diagram on BRP parts site shows and offset in the shift rod so I thought it must come apart below the offset. Rick.

The whole shift rod comes out in one piece.
The offset is only 1/2" or so and the thru holes are about 1 1/4.
Leave the last bolt in until you have the motor completely trimmed up.
Take out the last bolt and slide the entire unit straight out. Give yourself about 5ft behind the motor when it is trimmed up to pull lower unit.

Thanks so much. I think I understand how to do it now. Rick.
