Re: 1995 johnson 70 hp / running trouble

Sounds like a hot failure, Mack. Dropping one cylinder. It should still idle and troll on 2 cylinders as though there is no problem. If the S.L.O.W. circuit were coming on it should limit the rpm to around 2300-2500rpm.

They are most likely to be in the powerpak, though the coil and stator are not out of suspicion.

However, don't start throwing parts at it yet.

Get a hair dryer (not a heat gun. Heat guns get too hot and can cause new problems). Start her up on the muffs and apply heat to the powerpak, then the stator, then the coils. Keep the heat on one part for several minutes. The chances that you will be able to get a hot failing part to fail are pretty good. If you get the hot failure the idle speed will drop. Take the heat away and it should soon pick back up again. Now you know what part to change.

Good luck. :)
