how do you check for a bad coil?, my motor misses sporadically, cylinder kicking in and out
have cleaned all connections on the coils, checked for loose grounds, and still same results
any ideas?
Use a timing light that clips around the plug wire. Have someone run the boat for you and when the engine starts to miss, just check each plug wire and see if you can see a wire that is not firing correctly.
well instead of doing that, i bought 3 new coils - no change- exact same symptoms - sputter then it kicks back in - at idle it is smooth - pulled wires off at idle and "tune" changes - but between 1/2 and wot it will kick in and out?????
found and fixed
found 2 ground wires loose as well as one of the power pack wires to the coil had a breal in it
tightend ground wires, taped off break and she runs like the "striped ape" she used to!!!
thanks for all the help
Hey, there's way worse things than having spare coils on on board!
You didn't say whether you're running it in a test tank or on muffs, but I'll throw this out there just in case -- revving your motor without a load is particularly harmful for 2-stroke outboards.
