Boat was running fine, suddenly motor reved up and sounded like it was out of the water. I pulled down on the throttle and then pushed it back up and it sounded like something caught and it ran good for about 5 minutes then the overheating alarm came on for about 45 seconds, could not run except at very low speed after that. When I pushed the throttle up to full speed it sounded like the motor was out of the water and it would not go.

Ouch, doesnt sound good. Do a compression check on all cylinders. Shouldnt be no more than a 10 psi difference in each cylinder.

Perhaps you spun the prop.. Pull it off and take a look at the hub. You might be able to see it the rubber between the splined section, and the prop has cooked, or split, or burned. If you cannot see anything, try another prop anyhow as this is the easist check. If not it may be something worse..
