STARTED CUTTING OUT LAST TIME OUT, ALMOST TO POINT OF QUITTING. HAD TO IDLE BACK TO DOCK BECAUSE GIVING THROTTLE ONLY RESULTED IN MINIMAL RPM'S AND AN ALARM FROM THE IGNITION. THE ALARM WOULD SOUND ONLY WHEN THROTTLE APPLIED ABOVE IDLE. THE ALARM WAS INTERMITTANT BEEPING. HOPE I HAVEN'T FRIED IT. This is a 1995 Mercury 150hp 2.0L with carburators. Today I started it up again, and after only 1 minute of running the alarm sounded loudly. The alarm goes: beep, beep, beep, beep..........rapidly. The engine ran fine for the first minute then sounded like the timing was retarted or something. It would not rev very far following the alarm going off. Is this the oil reservoir alarm or heat sensor alarm? Checked the oil reservoir sensor and it passed; no continuity. Any ideas on what to check next as I'm clueless.

Welcome Dough Boy

We are happy to try and help out - please post in lower case as CAPITALS LOOK LIKE YOU ARE SHOUTING!

We need to know all the details of your motor -model, serial number and year. Sounds to me like you maybe low on oil in the reservoir tank - what have you checked? Give us more info.

Greg

Re: 1995 Merc 150 Alarm

As you can see I've edited my original post, Sorry about the screaming. 1995 Merc 150 2.0l 25" shaft on 21ft. Sea Pro Cuddy. Ran it this morning and the alarm went off quickly. The motor seemed to run normally for the first minute before changing it's tone, and the alarm in the dash went off screaming beep, beep, beep, beep........rapidly. Tested the oil reservoir sensor by checking for continuity between the two lead ends. No continuity discovered, understand this is correct if sensor is good.

No continuity on the oil level sensor is good. Have you pulled the line on the discharge of the oil pump to verify that you have flow, when the engine is at idle? Only run long enough to verify!!! These lube alert modules will cause the engine rpm's to drop off when an abnormal condition is sensed. Theye are known to crap out easily and Merc charge about $180 for a new module (OUCH)!

Re: 1995 Merc 150 Alarm

Do you have a shop manual ... it gives detailed trouble shooting for the oil injection system (that's what the pulsing horn tone means). I would add oil to the gas PRONTO until you know with certainty what's going on.

Beside the tank level, there's also a rotation sensor that detects rotation of the oil pump driven shaft. The shop manual gives considerable detail to check that.

The last thing to check is the driven gear/drive gear. The drive gear is a POS plastic helical gear on the crankshaft which turns the driven pump shaft. The plastic gear in one of my '95 150's crapped out. If this fails, you have three choices:
1) Plug the the pump shaft hole after removing the driven shaft, etc. with a plug from RickRacer.com and run premix. Around $40.
2) Tear down the powerhead to replace the plastic gear on the crankshaft. VERY expensive.
3) Install an aftermarket electronic oiling system from Marine Solutions. $350 to 400 if you install.

I chose fix #3, because I wanted to retain the oil injection and all oil alarms.

Good luck.

Check it out after you are sure your oiling system is functioning properly. I do not think your oiling system is malfunctioning.

My module failed causing the same symptoms. First thing I did was add oil to the fuel just in case it was for real that the oil system was playing up. Best to be safe than Very sorry whilst fault finding.
