While in Minnesota I hit an unseen deep water rock at around 20 MPH and gouged and put a slight bend in my otherwise perfect lower unit skag. .Did a quick inspection and saw no cracks. Boat ran fine with no vibrations or issues for the last 3 days of the trip. After sitting for a month after the trip with no use I noticed gear lube leaking from around the prop and down the skag. The repair shop told me it is the shift shaft seal. Could this seal cause an external gear lube leak? Thanks in advance for any information.

You mean Skeg . . .

Yes, although the issues of hitting something and then afterward having a leak seem more coincidental, rather than cause & effect. . . If the seal wears out the oil comes out.

Make sure it is gear oil and not residual 2 cycle oil. Stick a finger into it and sniff it. If it stinks like rotten eggs, it is gear oil.
