1995 mercury force 70 hp lower unit

water in oil lower unit is this a repair that i can do myself or do i need to put in shop - $250.00 plus seal kit.

Yes, if you have rudimentary skills and can use hand tools, you can do the job. FIRST--try to find out how the water is getting in. It may be something simple like a not fully tightened fill/drain/ vent screw or a leaking shift rod seal. These do not require any disassembly to fix.

how do i test to find leak .i have a background as an appliance repairman
for 30 years i think i can fix i hope thanks

First drain the gearcase.
Then pull it off the motor.
Rig up an adaptor so you can pump 3-4 pounds of air pressure into it with a bicycle tire pump.
Test it in a tub of water.


Gear case seal kit, from any Merc dealer, Mercury part number 26 - 814669,
about $55.
