I hope someone can help me with this. We had the boat out on the lake today. Engine was running perfect when it suddenly stopped late in the day on the way back to the dock. The starter would not engage the engine, it just made a whining sound, all gauges reading normal. We checked the oil level and everything seemed fine, but it did not start. HELP!

Re: 1995 omc 3.0 cobra problem

Bendix is not engaging the flywheel.. Sometimes the solenoid on the starter won't pull the arm enough to push the Bendix far enough to engage the flywheel (confusing huh).. will need the solenoid ON THE STARTER replaced .. Got em right here on iboats
No reason to start freaking out unless somehow you chewed all the teeth off the flywheel.. That would be time for freak out mode..

Remove the starter.. Look at the teeth on both the flywheel and the starter.. If everything looks okay( and you would be able to tell if it wasn't) take the starter to a repair shop if you feel unable to repair it yourself.. Tell them what it is doing..
