Hello, Can anyone tell me if this is a Chevy or Ford engine? I have not bought the boat yet so just going off of pictures. It is on a 1995 Four Winns 225 sundowner. Thanks.

50FAGPMDM 1994

*SOME* of the above engines have the excellent OMC (actually Volvo Penta) SX drives on the back and some have the OMC interim drives.

It's important to know the actual model number because it could be any of the above models (except maybe the EFI since the picture depicts a carbureted model)

In general, if it's an "Interim" drive RUN!!!!! (away)

If it's a Ford, Walk away. If it's a Ford + Interim drive, FLY AWAY!!!!

Get the model number to be sure what it is.

Cheers,

Rick

Thanks for the detailed response Rick. Much appreciated. Im buying this needing the outdrive but am not paying much. Im not sure if you would know the answer to this but if it did have the interim OMC, can it be replaced with a Volvo SX.

if you can get if for $2000 less than the cost of installing a complete pulley to prop Mercruiser or Volvo setup, skip it.

it will cost you more than the boat is worth to try to polish a ford-powered turd

Thanks Scott. I may have to reconsider. My plan was to buy the boat for $1700 and put on a used Cobra/Volvo SX outdrive that I found for $700 (comes with 1 year warranty) and hope it lasted me a few years. This would be the first boat I've owned and it would only be used about 50 hours a year.

BTW, I had a TYPO!

This should be 5.8L !! but I digress!
FOMOCO 5.9L
584ACPMDA 1994
584AGPMDA 1994
58FACPMDA 1994
58FACPMDM 1994
58FAGPMDA 1994
58FAGPMDM 1994
58FBDPMDA 1994

It is my understanding that you cannot just "bolt" an SX on an interim drive transom mount. You might be able to cobble something together if you find a boat with an SX drive you can scrounge parts from but you would still be saddled with the FOMOCO engine.

Now understand there's nothing really wrong with the Ford engines. It's just that the marine industry abandoned Ford. The support is waning and as such, the regular wear parts (manifolds, risers, ignition parts and EFI parts are becoming more expensive and harder to find.

If you're mechanically handy and have tools etc, and you find a complete engine drive package, (or donor boat ) you could swap it all over.

It doesn't matter if it's Volvo or Mercruiser. (I swapped out my previous 1987 460 King Cobra for the 1997 454/Bravo III and it wasn't hard.

I looked for a Volvo package and never found one but I did find several Mercruiser "firewall-forward" packages.

It seems that there's more used Merc stuff out there vs Volvo.

Yours is a 22ft boat. It would be awesome with a 454 and Bravo III in it!!
(or a 300hp 5.7L + VP DUOProp)

Cheers,

Rick

Thanks again. I ended up getting it. It came with the 5.8 EFI and they coverted everything to carburated setup a couple of years ago so I will probably run it until I come across any issues. I found a couple of used Cobra SX drives fairly cheap so I might try my luck putting a used one on for now.

You'll need a VP transom mount and probably a Volvo flywheel cover too. Don't know if the OMC Y-pipe will fit a VP transom plate.

You need to find a Ford powered Volvo SX boat for the parts.

Don't know if anyone here has done it. It might be cheaper to find a complete 5.7L engine, transom and associated parts.

Take pictures for all the rest of us!

Good luck

they converted to carb because the EFI parts are NLA

Ok.

Somehow I thought you said it had the raw water pump on the back of the drive.

Does that engine have the raw water pump on the engine and NOT on the drive?

If it's on the engine, it's an SX drive. That's good and since the EFI system is gone, you'll have a MUCH easier time keeping it running!

If they replaced the EFI with a carburetor, did they also replace the SPITFIRE ignition system. If they DID NOT, expect to have to replace the distributor with an after market Mallory, MSD or other (MARINE SAE J1171 rated) distributor and ignition system for WHEN (not if) the Spitfire system fails.

Was this boat regularly operated in salt water?

If it has (or even if it hasn't) , remove and inspect both the exhaust manifolds and risers (separated).

If they're not severely rusted, resurface both the manifold/riser surfaces and replace the riser gaskets..

If they are severely rusty, replace the manifolds and risers both (sides). You can buy them online. The kit (riser/manifold, both sides) is about $1000 or so. iboats sells this stuff I think. Just do a search.

Prices I found online didn't include shipping (and/or tax) ymmv!!

Yes the water pump is on the engine. The ignition system is replaced and the manifolds were resurfaced when they did the carb/ignition swap a couple of years ago and they look brand new. I don't believe the boat has seen saltwater.

Well, your main problem is getting a good drive to replace the current failed (missing?) Volvo SX drive I would presume.
I would replace the gimbal bearing and bellows too since you'll be in there.

You'll need an alignment bar too. You don't want to get it all back together only to have the coupler fail due to mis-alignment.

Make sure the drive is the correct ratio for your application. Should be somewhere around 1.50:1 ratio for a small block V-8.

If you got the boat cheap enough, you're probably "good"!

Regards,

Rick
