hi boating gods,

I recently purchased a 1995 wellcraft (3000lbs)with a 5.0l alpha one 1.65 outdrive. The problem I am having is the hole shot is poor at best and struggles to plane the engine will rev well past 5000 ( Im not 100% confident in the tach yet) even though the WOT is supposed to be 4200-4600. The current prop (stainless) has seen better days, I got the following sequence of numbers off the outside of the prop( BE Quicksilver 48 16316 A4 19P) but I`m not 100% sure of them as the whole prop is fairly worn. And i was unable to make the GPS work when i was on the lake so i cannot give a top speed.

I know its not a lot to work with but can anyone who has a simillar set-up advise if I am in the right ball-park of prop? And or do I need to wait until I get the GPS and tach checked?

Any help is much appreciated

Something is not right, could be several things, tired motor, slipping prop hub, slipping coupler. That boat should come on plane pretty quick with what sounds like a 19P prop. How does the bottom of the boat look.

If your current prop is in bad shape that is what I'd change first. 19 pitch sounds right for your set up.

Daze, if you will give me the actual boat model, length and HP of your engine I can run it through my program and tell you what you need. But do not buy anything until you know the tach is working right and you have some speed numbers to work with from the GPS. That could prove to be an expensive mistake, you are currently running a 14" x 19" mercury vengeance prop from the numbers you gave on the prop. Also tell me how many people you normally carry and do you pull skiers, what are your main uses of the boat to help me pik the right prop for your uses.

Re: 1995 Wellcraft 5.0 prop

Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me. I have taken some photos of the prop so u can see what the blades look like.

I normally kneeboard with 2 or 3 others in the boat. The bottom of the hull looks ok for a boat that lives on a trailer.

The boat is a 1995 wellcraft eclipse 196s 19'6" long with a 5.0l 205hp

Again thanks for your help

Daze, I don't see any major damage to the prop, but it could be skewing the numbers at high speeds. With that being said I would like you to have the tach checked for accuracy and then run the boat and give us some RPM and GPS speed numbers starting at 3,000 RPM all the way up to WOT. Be sure and run the boat in 180 degree opposite directions for each test then add the numbers together and then divide by two for accurate results.
When you have this information I can recommend a prop.

My last boat was a 1996 Wellcraft eclipse 1950 with the 4.3L in it and I ran a 14.5X18P 4 blade stainless on it with great success. Great holeshot and decent top end. Wellcrafts are heavy boats so you do need to keep that in mind when picking a prop.

As you can see that prop is old tech...The next pic is one with a bit of rake...Plz post your gear size

Daze, will you give us the manufacturer, model and dimensions for the stainless prop you are using at this time.

Opps missed the 1.65..You should be able to push a 3 blade 21 such as a Stilletto or Solas..Or a 4 blade Stilletto or Solas..While the 3 blades will give you maybe 1-2 mph better top end speed, The 4 blades wil give you much better planeing speed (lower) and increased punch in the 15-40 mph range and a overall feeling of increased smoothness..;)
