1996 115 looper idle issues

Just rebuilt the carbs as I had gas leaks. Other than that it was running fine. Put new bowls on them too. Now that it is back together it is idling rough on the muffs. High speed jets looked clean when swapping them to the new bowls. Did not touch the one other jet in the upper part of the carbs. Do I need to readjust the needle jet now? Not familiar with how to tell which way to go if I do need to adjust them. How do you tell if too lean or too rich? I thought you normally don't need to adjust them. I bought the boat new in 1996 and have never had to do any adjustments. Did I screw something up in the rebuild? Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Greg

hard to say, but I would not think that you would need to adjust your needle jet. main jets have nothing to do with idle anyway, you need to be inspecting your idle passages.

thanks for the response. If I got the float angled up too much and it was stopping the gas too soon you think that would give a rough idle? This is my first try at rebuilding carbs so maybe I did something wrong. I watched some youtube videos of the same type of carb rebuild so thought I had it right but maybe not.

Checked the intermediate jets, looked clean. Still ran rough.Did a lake test. Once the high speed jets kick in it runs great. Plugs looked wet. Ran a can of engine tuner through it and put in new plugs. Better but still not as good as pre-rebuild. Not sure what to try next.

I think that the idle adjustment screw should be GENTLY screwed in the backed out 3 turns. count your turns in and see where it was set. you can also flush this passage with carb cleaner. I assume all gaskets and seals are installed properly and you cleaned the idle passages good.
