Hi all, I have looked around and cant seem to find out what the red lever and air stem could be on my motor. I am having problems with the motor when i run for a while then stop to fish for while. When I try to get going again the motor wants to die when I shift into forward. I have tried different tilt positions and nothing seems to work better. It can take up to 10 times restarting the motor before it wants to take off. Thanks for your ideas

That is the primer solenoid manual lever. When it is turned in towards the body of the primer solenoid, it is closed. When it is turned outwards it manually opens to allow fuel in to the system. The valve is to spray fogging oil or whatever inside the motor.

To clarify the red lever is, as said, for operating the primer manually.
For normal electrical operation and when the motor is running it should point down the length of of the solenoid towards the opposite end.

Thanks for the replies that really helped. I have not noticed any leaks around the lever so i guess my problem maybe more in the carbs than in the primer. Any ideas about the carbs or what could be causing my stalling problem before i haul it to the mechanic. The motor starts everytime i turn the key just idles rough and wont stay running when i take off after sitting for awhile.

sounds like there could be a gas leak some where and you primer bulb is not staying pumped up. or is flooding out. i have a 94 175 and mine was doing the same thing but it was because the crank case was cracked and was sucking air and running lean
