1996 200HP - At my wits end - Overcharging Problem!!!

Seems like this problem won't go away: The motor is overcharging and won't go over 3k rpm. During July I replaced the carbs due to an idle issue. The mechanic had it for 5 weeks and could not get the motor to idle! That problem was solved but when I went out on the lake on a test run I had a hard time getting over 5K when I noticed it was charging over 18 volts (my gauge was pegged). I even checked it on my plotter and it read 19 volts. Then 1/2 of the motor seem to shut down(3K). I limped it back to dock and replaced the rectifier, batteries, cables and bus bars. The items other then the rectifier were going to be done in the off season. So I figured just in case.

Well, it seemed to run fine in dock and ran for about 20 minutes at idle with no change in voltage (13.1). Even at revs to 2500 it stayed below 14 and returned to 13.1. Well I ran it out to the lake, about a 10 minute idle and the voltage stayed about 13.1-13.3. After the no wake zone I opened her up and it immediately went to 3k and no more. I looked down and the volt meter was pegged again at 18.8 volts. I backed it down and idled back to dock. It came down to 13.3 on the way back, but would peg at the dock when I revved her over 2k. I have checked the spark on all six cylinders with a timing gun and all six seem to have the same degree of spark.

Obviously I seem to have some type of short or grounding problem but could it be the stator? I just hate to throw money at the problem. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I have not had the boat out all summer due to problems but I was hoping to at least use it on Labor Day - weather permitting.

I would start by checking all of your wires and connections under the cowl. Your tach is still working so that would indicate the stator is good. Something is causing the rectifier to increase voltage output plus drive the motor into slow mode. A funky rectifier can cause some weird issues and maybe the one you got was bad but to cause the same results as the other one I don't think so.

Thanks! - I will look into the wiring under the cowl.

[ my 225 evinrude did the same event when i exchanged changed 2 yellows at stator , one is for < 2500 rpm chaging and the other is for > 2500 RPM change them back
