I recently replace my 1985 25hp remote Mariner with a 1996 25hp remote Mariner. I hooked everything up and attempted to start it. When it started up it was in wide open throttle. I quickly cut the engine and attempted is several other times. I thought that I may have accidently reversed the linkage so I switched them. It then was only in gear in the neutral position and in neutral when you shifted it into forward or rerverse. Do I need to adjust the linkage? If so, how? Please help!

.
With any remote I've seen the shift cable moves first, then the throttle cable. You have to decide from there.Does the throttle need to pull forward,or push backward to speed up.
I think you have the wrong control box .

DHP

The throttle must pull forward to speed up. It is already pushed all the way up just by hooking up the linkage though. That is why is was reving all the way up when I started the motor. I unhooded the linkage totally and it idled fine though. AH! I see. The control box I have is set up to push to speed up and the motor I have needs it to pull to speed up. Does that sound right?

That is as right as you can be without me being there, myself. The older Mariners were pretty much Japanese, and required special controls.Your newer Mariner has been Mercanized, and is Merc compatable.

DHP
