My 1996 50 horse Merc 4 stroke is acting up. I had it out the other day and it ran fine at 5400 rpms for about 20 minutes then started to miss and got progressively worse until it would not run over 4000 rpms. I pulled the plugs and looked like #1 cylinder was not firing as it was wet. I pulled the #1 plug wire while running and didn?t sense any spark. Put new plugs in it last fall as part of winterization.
I bought a spark tester and have spark on all four cylinders. One curious thing though, I grounded all plugs not being checked but the motor tried to fire on each cylinder being tested for spark except #1. I guess I will take it back out and run it to see what happens, it's a jet motor so I cannot check at home.
I checked resistance for the coil packs (ok), the plug wires and resistor caps (ok), but both the stator and trigger were low, ~1 ohm and ~1 ohm. manual calls for 272-408 and 396-594 respectively. Can they both have gone bad at the same time or am I missing something? I disconnected all wires to each before checking them.
I checked compression and was good in all four cylinders.
Is there any other tests (I do not have a DVA) or procedures I can do before taking to a mechanic?

If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate hearing from you.
