Recently the voltage readings have been varying quite a bit. Sometimes about normal (14vdc) and other times 16 to 18 vdc and then other times about 12vdc. Thinking voltage regulator, but looking for someone with experience that can confirm my suspicions or give me other ideas of what could be causing this. Also any advice on how to troubleshoot so I don't buy something that's actually working OK.

Thanks,

Dave

Before replacing anything try cleaning all connections and making sure they are tight. And by connections means including the battery terminals, solenoid terminals, etc.

Jiggz,

Thanks for the reply and tip. Will check all connections...maybe tomorrow. Will reply with results.

Jiggz, I cleaned and checked/tightened all connections with no improvement. Voltage varies from 14+ volts at idle to 17+volts at 2000 rpm. At 2000 rpm the output varies between 14 volts and as high as 17.8 volts. Where do you suggest I look next? And are there ways to test the voltage regulator or stator, or is it a matter of replacing one item at a time? If so, what do you think is the logical place to start?

Thanks, Dave

The stator voltage on the two yellow wires going to the regulator should read between 14V - 16V AC depending on RPM. The voltage output from the red wire on the regulator should not read above approx. 14.5 volts DC. If it goes above that, then the regulator is bad.
