I have a 1996, 5.7 Mercruiser - mercarb - with closed cooling (half system). It has been running well all season except for the last two weeks. First sign, it started, seemed to be running rich, smoking a bit, left a slick on the water. Starboard side exhaust looked "brownish". It was close to operating temp but died out when I pulled throttle back towards neutral and it cranked a long time before re-starting. I chalked it up to flooding / choke out of tune as I had shift cable replaced in the spring. I reset choke, next few times start was OK fuel-wise - still a little slick on startup and brown exhaust on starboard side but ran up smoothly to temp and ran all day very clean. However, most recently - over past week. There are times on the cold start when I turn the key and nada - like I had no battery in it at all. I even went to verify the switch was on! In all 3-4 cases, I set the switch to both batteries and re-turned key and after a second or 2, it fired up. As in with the key fully engaged, nothing for a 2 count and then life. Little smoky, small slick, brown exhaust starboard side. Quick to clear that and no issue for the day. No rough idle /running once up to temp, no smoke, no water in oil - at least on the stick. Risers feel cool when at operating temp...but, something doesn't "feel right". After running it for 3 hours today, I am letting it sit overnight to pull the plugs tomorrow to see if there are any signs of water...any and all council is welcomed.
