i have been looking over my new to me 1996 5.7 carbed Volvo Pentax with an SX drive. I have found that the exhaust flappers are installed and look to be in good shape. Still covered in rubber type material and seem sound. They don’t seem to close to a water tight seal. I can see that water could get past them. How tight should the seal on the y tube? Thanks

VP removed the flappers in a service bulletin.

Yes I know VP no longer recommends exhaust flappers. I am trying to decide weather to remove or leave mine in place. Given the age of my boat I was surprise to see them. They are in good shape but it looks like water could easily get past them. How tight should they seal?

Actually I am chasing down a idle only rattle coming from the back of the engine. The exhaust flappers still have their coating so the shouldn’t be rattling. I was convinced the springs on the engine coupler where worn and rattling, but I am realizing these engines usually have the “donut” style coupler. I don’t think the make noise as the fail.
