I have a 1996 7.4 liter Gi Volvo Penta / OMC

my idle is running around 1000 and needs to be around 600
this is causing my going into neutral to be tough cus of the extra pressure on the clutch and cone
need to lower the idle
but no were in the service manual does it adress this

help please

or it could be a shifting adjustment... but i doubt it this boat is imaculate and only has like 300 hrs on it

That high an idle will make it tough to come out of gear. Disconnect the throttle cable and see if the idle comes down. Could be nothing more than a cable failing. What is the full model number of your engine (need all those letters following the 7.4)

First off...Thank you for your speedy respone
secondly lies the dilema.... that time frame is when Volvo bought OMC.. soooooo the serial numbers are as follows.
S/N T01289602
M/N 74FFPBOA
the intake cowling says volvo penta 7.4L Gi.... but the plate on the engine says OMC followed by those numbers
Im assuming its a GM based block wich is irrelevant but all the same confusing LOL
The shifting system on the volvo drives is soooo straight forward... they are almost bullet proof.. minimal adjustment and simple mechanical action... I have to believe its a idle issue... the guy says to me "man when I put it in forward it just takes off".... and im thinking ....Thats cus your idling at 1100 rpm LOL

S/N T01289602
M/N 74FFPBOA

Those are OMC numbers, Volvo never used the T0xxxx serial number method, but they did use the same 2 letter model designation, and there is no such thing as a BO model (74FFPBOA) and the FF in the model number was used in 96 by OMC but as an NC model, not BO.

Have you removed the throttle cable to see if it slows down? That is the first step.

I have not... going to do that first thing tomorrow morning.... can you give me an idea of what steps to take either way?
If i remove cable and it slows down then what
If i remove cable and it doesnt slow down then what
in looking at the throttle body the throttle cable attaches to the trottle body and there is a little threaded stud that sticks out of the throttle body that keeps the idle from going any lower... but it looks to me there is no way to adjust this stud without some prettty decent removal of parts..... any way ill tackle it in the morning....

ohh and a correction on the numbers..Model # 74FFPNOA...serial number T01289601
and the plate on the engine says OMC.... but the cowling on top says volvo penta....and i Know they threw eachothers parts together during those years because of the merger

Ok, will consider it an NC, as there is no such thing as an NO either.

If it's not a cable adjustment problem then check the file below. DO NOT try to change the throttle plate adjustment on that engine.
