Does anyone know if there are any identification marks on the pistons? I had a cylinder rebuilt (new piston and rings) 4 years ago and a problem has come up with the same cylinder. I took the head off and the piston looked like the one that I "replaced" 4 years ago - banged up and pitted! Any way to tell if it was an original piston put in 13 years ago or a new one installed 4 years ago?

there are usually makrs on the top ,your piston could be an after market or a omc replacement, but if its banged up bad you may not see the numbers,if your original piston of 13 yrs ago was that beat up,i doubt its the same one,if the cylinder was bored,it would be oversized an in outboards the piston an rings need to be changed,if the ist blow up was as bad as you describe,im 85% sure boring was done,i have seen som bad stuff done along the way so i wont say 100%.that all said, anytime you have an engine rebuilt, its not a bad idea to ask to see the old parts when you pick up,tell the rebuilder first ,that will keep him honest,we saved parts til the customer took the rebuild and paid off.
