1996 90hp trim motor good / NO power to it!

I started this season with the tilt working (going UP.) DOWN would work sometimes. This has happened in the past and would somehow fix itself. This year no good. At this point both directions don't work.<br />1. Direct 12v to the trim\tilt motor (TTM)shows it is working.<br />2. A new set of relays produces the same result. (I get a "click" in one direction and a "chatter" in the other.) The chatter dissappears when the TTM is disconnected. (no load) It reverses when I switch the relays.<br />3. I get the same result when using both up/down switches, one on the engine the other on the motor controller. (One is only a few years old.)<br />4. I have cleaned a few of the contacts in the relay box. I will have to look into this further when the rain stops.<br />5. The battery connection seems good. (Enough to start the engine.)<br />6. Before I tried a direct power test to the TTM, a meter showed voltage (12v+)coming out its diconnected wire. (Reversed polarity with the up/down switch.) Very strange! <br /><br />Seems like everything is working properly, but fails on load when the motor is connected. Like I said, the TTM is working like a champ on direct battery connect. trace the wiring.<br /> unplug the short control 5 pin harness. use a jumper and go from the batt term on the starter solinoid to the 18ga green and blue wires. if it works repair the wiring from the engine to the box, if it does not check the power supply to the relays while under load,<br /> the TTM uses the relays to make the + and - connections depending on which relay is activated, the activated relay also activates the other relay for a ground. if either 10 ga red or black to the relays is bad or corroded it chatters. chattering indicates lack of proper current flow. trim up and down is controled by the polarity of the voltage on the motor,12+positive on the green and the blue to ground and the motor spins and the pump directs fluid to the down hydraulic circuits, 12V+ on the blue and the green grounds the TTM spins the otherway and fluid goes through the up hydraulic circuits.

Thanks for the help rodbolt. <br /><br /> I tested the wiring (18ga green and blue) to the TTM from each relay socket using the starter solinoid as you suggested. All was fine. Then I checked/jumped the source wire(red)to the same connections (18ga green and blue) and again the motor went up and down.<br /><br />With this being the case, it had to be a bad wire or connection at the box.<br /><br />As it turns out, I then pinched all the sleeve connections in both relay plugs with a needle-nose pliers. BINGO!...That was the problem. (and those connections looked so clean and good)<br /><br />Thanks again.<br /><br />Bob
