Looking to purchase a 23 hydra-sports WA with a 1996 225 envinrude. Were they good motors? Any frequent problems? Should I stay away? Thanks.

Hooper..That is a very good motor, provided it has been taken care of. If I were you I would do a compression test before buying it and ask the current owner about the PM he has done to it, ie. when was the last time the water pump was changed, how often did he decarb it, when was the last time the carbs were rebuilt, things like that. If it is in good shape then you should be happy with it, that's a good HP for that boat. Good luck.

Hooper....Just had a thought, is this a Ficht motor? I'm pretty sure they first used the Ficht in 97 but have also heard there may have been some models around in 96 with it.

There was a recall back then for only motors in a certain serial number range for loosening the bolts in the upper crankshaft bearing housing. Check with a knowledgable dealer to see if that motor was in the recall range. The improved bolts were gold colored and are visible under the flywheel.

As with anything used, have a mechanic who is QUALIFIED to check it out thoroughly.

mmcpeck..Thanks for your reply No, it's not a Ficht. But another boat I am looking at has a 2000 225 Ficht. Should I stay away from those. I heard that the Ficht models were bad when they first came out, but the newer models had less problems. Any help would be appreciated.
