I just got a 1996 Evinrude 15 from Craigslist. Model CE 15REDG. It's in mostly good condition, but the idle adjustment knob on the throttle handle does not function. Turning the adjustment knob doesn't do anything. I'm assuming that that's the bad part. It screws off, but I don't see anything inside it, that would adjust anything. What is that part called, and where can I get it? Thanks. By the way, the throttle handle operates from the start area, all the way to full throttle. It just stops at the "start" position, and won't go down any further.

Re: 1996 Evinrude 15 idle problem

I went through a lot of personal problems (family trouble), but I finally ordered the part, and it's coming tomorrow. It's the idle adjustment. Part 0584302. Do I need to remove the twist-grip, to install this part? Or does it just screw in to the end of the installed twist-grip?

Re: 1996 Evinrude 15 idle problem

The knob on the end of the twist grip is only for a final LOW SPEED STOP setting as if you were trolling & wanted to return to that slow speed after you ran to the other end of the lake. The actual idle adjustment screw is on the RH side (looking forward) top of the carb. You need to remove the upper cowling to access it.

If I remember right, you have to remove the twist grip to replace the knob. This is done by depressing the 2 opposing detents (about 1/4" in dia.) on the rear of the twist grip. Depress them both at the same time & if you get them in far enough the handle will slide off forward. Observe how the inner parts arer aasembled allowing the cable to operate. The adjustment knob is screwed in from the inside.

Now to add something else to your situation, this idle knob on the end of the grip may be OK, but the cable linkage from the handle to the carb may need adjustment. The end of the cable has a plastic end that screws onto the cable. This end snaps onto a ball socket on the timing plate arm. The cable end may need to be adjusted so that the minimal amount of adjustment of the threaded in end plastic knob can be effective. In essence, all three, the end knob, cable end & the idle screw have to all be syncronized.

Also you mention your range of motion of the twist grip is not full range. This could be because of the above mentioned cable end being out of adjustment.

Thanks. That is the EXACT info I needed. I will remove the twist-grip, and install the new part today.
