1996 Evinrude 150 - only "runs" with key in START position and starter engaged
Howdy ya'll,
It's been a minute. I've got a good head-scratcher for you today. I have a 1996 Evinrude 150 Looper and was out running a few weeks back and the motor suddenly shut off and would only "run" with the key in START position (in other words, I got stranded and had to get a tow).
I've had a number of various issues over the years, all of which, with the help of forums like this one, I have been able to overcome and get fixed.
Prior to this the boat ran great for the last year. And it was about a year ago I replaced:
- stator
- regulator
- power pack
- coil wires
- plugs (Champion with proper gap)
- fuel lines
- fuel primer bulb
- Visually inspected VRO pump and was fine
Since this issue a few weeks ago I have
- Rebuilt carbs from plate forward (so didn't have to re-do link and sync)
- replaced OIS eye
- disconnected black wire with yellow stripe at ignition switch to see if boat would run, it made no difference
- replaced fuel filter
Really the strangest thing and I am stumped. I tested the orange/orange-blk wires from stator and get 56 OHMS. Big yellow wires from stator have 0-2 OHMS. Both of these appear to be in spec.
Has anyone experienced this type of issue? Any thoughts on what to test/check next? I believe it is an ignition system issue based on what I am reading but am unable to pinpoint any faults. Thanks in advance for any thoughts and suggestions!
