1996 Evinrude 15HP no spark

Just bought an older 16' fishing boat with a 15 hp Evinrude 1996 vintage, so I was told. Having trouble starting, tested the spark the old fashioned way with a screwdriver in the plug wire and held it close to the plug tip, with no spark visible. Any suggestions for my next test or part for replacing? Thanks for any hope, my 5 year old son is ready to fish and the electric motor is not getting us to his favorite spot as fast as he can change subjects from fishing to snack time.

I would recommend getting a spark tester that has an adjustable gap. Also it would be a good idea to check it at dusk or later as spark will be easily visable. Your spark should be blue/white and able to snap accross a 3/8 to 1/2 inch gap. Try that and get back to us. Best of luck. Rick.
