1996 Evinrude 48 spec not pumping water through

Yesterday I was running my engine and all of a sudden it won't take in water or drain water from the tube in the rear. It will run but overheats quickly. Does anyone have any clue why it would stop drawing in water? thanks for any info

Motors need a new impeller about every 3 / 5 years.----Start with an inspection of the waterpump.
