I did a bone head mistake and now I am scratching my head. While replacing my bilge pump, I left my the ignition key in the "on" position and I accidentally shorted the wires. The fuse did blow, and I have replaced it, and now everything works perfectly, except the motor, which was working perfect before the repair. I imagine that I sent some current back to the motor, which possibly toasted some diodes? Any help would be most appreciated. Should I be looking at my control box and ignition key area?

thanks in advance.

you should be ok unless you cooked some wires under the motor cover.look for a red wire coming from your starter solenoid back to the main engine wire harness there will be a 20 amp fuse see if it is blowen .

It's on the starboard side of the motor and is very likely blown.

thanks for the great advice, I checked and bingo it's blown. I'm pretty sure after I replace it, all will good again in my waterworld.

thanks and if for some reason this isn't it, well I'll be back again.

your bilge pump and other accessories, should not be wired thru the ignition switch. they should have a complete separate power source (wire from battery, to fuse block). nothing should be on the ingition, other than motor related items.

Tashasdaddy, I've been checking the wires and you are correct, my accessories are separate from the ignition. I replaced the blown fuse and for some reason, the key works but my tilt keeps blowing out the fuse. I was able to correctly wire back the bilge pump and it all works without blowing anything up. But this tilt thing is killing me. from what I can see, it's a factory set-up, the switch is wired back to the motor and just makes makes or breaks the tilt circuit. The fuses I got were 20 amp, which the previous one was, but someone mentioned it should be 25 amp, could that be the problem?

Thanks for your help in advance.

yup a local, i typically launch from oak harbor or beach blvd, but sometimes head out at isle of palms or sisters creek - it's great having a trailerable boat in jax.

As far as wiring, i must have done something, I'll have to check them all again, it's just a pain as so much of it's bundled and wrapped.

Tashasdaddy, pm me if ya make house calls, this is giving me fits and it's probably something simple.

Re: 1996 evinrude 48 spl

I keep blowing fuses, the motor starts fine, but the tilt keeps shorting out. I pulled out the switch and as best as I can tell no wires are bare or shorting, I'll test the switch next and see if it's bad in some way. Is there anything else on the motor that could be shorting out. or another fuse that I need to replace? I never messed with the motor wires so I am not sure what's up. Any help would be great.

you could have fried a reply. i'm not good on the tilt stuff. i'm a westsider, fresh water fish. i dropped a coil yesterday evening, on a evening cruise, limped in on one cylinder. the best Evinrude shops in Jax, are Beck's and Jeff's. i prefer Jeff's.

Re: 1996 evinrude 48 spl

went over the becks as they're close to me, great people and will probably end up doing some business with them as it turns out the trim motor is what is shorting things out - just ask me how many fuses I went through to figure this one out! I never thought it would be that, but after I cut one of the motor wires, click click goes the relay and no more blown fuses. Ugh, anyone know what a rebuild costs? or a new trim motor?

thanks again for all your help.

Re: 1996 evinrude 48 spl

Ok, how do i safely remove the trim motor, the engine is in the down position and there is no way to lift it up. Do i have to unscrew the relief screw first and bleed out all the fluid? or do i un-bolt the thing from the engine clamp - 2 large nuts? If un-bolt it, will it spring down, I assume it is under some pressure. I've never done this before and I'd like not to get hurt or break anything in the process.
thanks
