1996 Force 120 water pressure question

hi i have just put my 1st impeller in and my pressure out of the pee hole is weak, lots of water out of the hole by the shift rod, and out of the hole 4-5" above the prop, that i did not know was there before the impeller change, and out of the exhaust, i'm not sure if i did something wrong any help will be great. thanks john

Are you sure you sealed the water pump houseing ?

How did the shaft seal look on he top part of the houseing?

Sounds like maybe its leaking around the houseing and this wont let the pump force water up.

Did you start the motor without any water , it only takes 5 seconds to destroy the new impeller.

It sounds more like a leak in or around the W/P houseing or the water intake tube isnt seated right.

hi and thanks for the reply, i did not put any sealer on anything but the bolts, i replaced all the seals, two times, it's hard to find any info on my 1996 120 force, i had the ears on the lower unit every time i started the motor. how do i check to see if the water intake tube is seated right. thanks for your help.

When you replaced the L/U did it slide all the way up and seat without any trouble?

When you pulled it did you inspect the copper tube inside the lower houseing?

Sometimes this tube comes out of the motor power head when removeing the L/U, if none of this happend then I would think its a leak around the water pump houseing.

Is it a new houseing?

ok i didn't know that there is a copper tube inside the lower unit, there is this piece of 2 1/2" pvc with rubber in both ends, that i changed out after the water pressure was low, how do i check to see if the copper tube came out of the power head, and can i just use some silicone on the water pump housing. thanks again john.

John, there is no way you could miss the water tube if it indeed came out of the bottom of the power head. If it did you would have trouble seating the L/U back on, when you put it back up on the motor you felt the shaft slide in and it slid all the way to where the L/U touched the bottom of the motor leg your good. so I do not think this is the problem but rather the water pump houseing leaking or there is pitting in the walls of the houseing allowing water to by pass.

Theres a 2 and 1/2 inch PVC pipe inside your lower unit?


The only thing I have ever seen is the copper tube ,about 3/4 of an inch for the water to travel up to the power head, most times it stays inplace when you pull the L/U. Its located in the leg of the motor and not in the L/U itself. You have to look up in the leg to the bottom of the power head to see it .

ok i have the unit back down again, and there is no copper tube, just that peice of pvc that you get when you buy the lower unit seal kit, so i'm going to pull the impeller off and seal this. thanks so much for the info. i'll let you know later if it worked.. have great day.

OK now I understand the PVC , it should be about 3/4 of an inch od ,you were talking as in LONG , I got to start reading slower LOL. That is where the copper tube slides into . The tube is up twards the power head , you need to look up under the motor leg not on the Lower Unit. You may need a light to see it under there.

I do not belive it came out if you didnt see it when you pulled the lower unit, it would be stuck on the little PVC tube if it did or it would fall on the floor.

yes this 2 1/2" pvc connect's my impeller housing to the tube that feeds the motor. this 96 120 force is different from all others,. and thanks for the welcome to iboats.

hey rudedude, i did what you said and pulled the impeller off and sealed around the intake tube, and i put a bead of silicone across the back of the impeller to seal it from the exhaust. and the pressure was the same about 7 lbs. i ran the boat a mile or so, and fished for two long..lol.. without catching much, then went i started the motor the pressure went to 14 lbs. so everything looks great now..maybe the dirty water of the potomac river seated the impeller. i'm not sure why, but it's fixed.. thanks again for your help. have a great day.

It may have been a slight bit of junk blocking the little pee tube.

No fish ? I know that feeling very well.
