# days ago, at Lake Keowee,SC started right up and ran fine for about 5-10 minutes. Then it suddenly lost power. Moving the throttle only made a slight difference from idle. Started right up every time. (6-7 times) Well yesterday, I thought it must be spark plugs. I went to the marina and bought new plugs. they were not champion, which were in it.They are (NGK BR9HS 4522). I installed them and it started right up and ran like new for 5-10 minutes. Then suddenly died. Will not restart. Will hit after about 6-10 attemps but will not start at all. Any idea on what I should check to fix this. We were stranded most of the day yesterday. Any help from a person who may know is greatly appreciated. Thank you

After further investigation, I think they sold me the wrong plugs. I am finding that the NGK BUZHW should be the correct spark plug for my motor? I am however seeing a longer thread on the NGK BUZHW that the Champion QL76V . Is that the problem? Is it that the spark plug was not deep enough?

The plug they sold you was too long, but Champion says they are a replacement.
The QL76V are the right one.
But I don't think the plugs are the problem :(
Sounds like it's overheating or the fuel pump is bad??

Seems like the plugs are the problem due to the change in motor operation. When I put in the wrong plugs the marina sold to me ( The NGK BR9HS), which are not the long (NGK BUZHW) that was wrongly recommended for my motor, it ran great 5-10 minutes until died, would not start back with those. I cleaned the old champions then the motor starts but runs at very low rpms. Like it is slightly throttled. I am going to get new QL76V plugs today and install them and see what happens. I will post results.

I just got back from getting new plugs. They did not have the champions but they had the correct NGK plugs ( NGK BUZHW). They said they were definitely correct for my motor and were rated better than the champion QL78V plugs. SO I'll give them a try. Does anyone know the plug gap for the 96 Force 40HP outboard?

Plugs aren't the problem. I could put lawnmower plugs in there and the same thing would happen.
Test the alarm system for overheating, then check the diaphragm in the fuel pump.
The primer has a tiny hose that goes to the side or bottom of the carb, pinch that off after it starts. The primer has a diaphragm in it and sometimes they go bad and feed excess fuel into the motor choking it out??

In the picture, you can see the big black fuel line go by, then a small discolored clear tube, which looks like it goes under the float bowl. Then a small black tube . Which small tube should I pinch off to check if it's the primer diaphragm? Thank you

Well, I was told when I bought it that it was a 1996. Turns out after checking for myself, it is a 1998 Force 40hp

Does anyone know from the pictures above which gas line Jerry was talking about to pinch after it starts to see if the primer diaphragm is bad? Small black or discolored clear?

Hey Jerry or anyone. I am strongly thinking of replacing the solenoid primer. It cost over $100 but if it fixes it, it's worth it. What do you think?

It is the small black fuel tube he is refer to.
The primer solenoid system takes fuel from the carb bowl (discolored tube) and spray a small amount of fuel into the engine intake manifold, behind the carb (small black tube). This is instead of a regular choke butterfly system.
If the diaphragm in the prime solenoid is leaking the engine will get some fuel that way instead of through the carb.

Test it.
Squeeze the ball to prime the system.
Turn the motor over a couple of revolutions.
Then unhook the yellow hose at the primer and pinch off the hose.
Then have someone turn the key and activate the primer.
There should be a shot of fuel from the primer when the key is pushed in.
If there's fuel coming from the primer and the keys not pushed in when it's running, then I'd say it's bad.
