I own a 1996 Force 90 hp 2 stroke. I was at cruising speed last weekend and the engine just died. I had been running it all day with no incident. Fuel is mixed properly. I removed the foot and found that the impeller insert (which is plastic) is cracked. Alarm never went off or I would have shut it down. Engine will still turn over, but not as fast as before. Thought about putting some mystery oil in each cylinder and giving it a shot before the inevitable. Thoughts?

The proper way to diagnose this is to open and inspect the cylinders by removing the head. Depending on how bad the damage is, you can actually replace broken pistons/rings assuming you have the desire and a little mechanical skill to do it. I could have recommended doing a compression check first, but the fact you said it overheated and drags when cranking over, is almost a guaranteed indication a ring or two is broken.

Try to save the head gasket also for proper post analysis.

Do the comp test first.
Then look inside the plug hole and see if there is any obvious damage.
Then pull the head if you see any problems.
