1996 Johnson 112spl oil on skeg???

Figured I'd go right to the experts. Have a 1996 Johnson 112spl with aftermarket VRO installed by previous owner. I notice that there is a thick oily substance that dribbles down the skeg after putting the boat up (I trailer). Is this the aftermath of the thru-prop exaust, or is this a caused by a problem of some sort???

Thanks so much...I am so not an expert on outboards!

black smells like gas, exhaust. smells like rotten egg, lower unit oil.
