I have a good running 1996 outboard. I have used it now 3 seasons and bought the motor used that had been sitting for a while. It starts and runs good. Idles maybe a little rough not bad and never stalls at idle.

My question is I have no idea when the Carbs were rebuilt. I don't know if they need a rebuild or not? Since it is running ok should I leave it alone or rebuild them? I keep hearing what my uncle who was a great mechanic always told me. If it aint broke dont fix it and I believe when you take something apart that's working you risk screwing it up.

So am I wrong to not remove the carbs and rebuild them?

If you're happy with the way it runs I would leave it alone. Just my opinion.

once you know if you've burned through all the old gas and blown her out and she still runs rough i'd consider cleaning them out, or general maintenance tuneup. 3yrs for an impellar many would say would be pushing it. Neglect, might lead to a bigger problem like melting a piston on wot 5mi from the dock. or runnin lean somewhere out there.

Well, don't worry about it. But when chaos panic and disorder strike just get up and leave...

Oh I have done all the other maintenace on the motor, thermostats, spark plugs, water pump, fuel filters, fuel lines. Only thing I have not touched are the carbs since it has been running ok.

have you played with the idle screw adjustments??? id run seafoam through motor, and everyonce in a while make sure both heads are not getting hot...... if you dont over heat that motor, and it doesnt run too lean, it should run and run....

maybe you can get a reading on the idle screws( turn them in while counting, make a note, then unscrew them all the way and look at the needle tips.... se if they are dirty or marked or dented... if so clean and straighten, then screw them back into about the same setting.... that way you havent disturbed any gaskets...and its the idel you are wondering about anyway.....

well thats what i would do if i didnt want to pull them all apart.... but in truth you should be able to pull them about at anytime and reassemble back to running condition.... it isnt that hard.....but if you dont have confidence...then you will second guess yourself

Ok going to run the seafoam through them. Leave them be for now. Keep using the blue gas treatment. Keep on running the old girl cause she is running pretty good. Temps are good the last time I checked the heads.

On those carbs you may be able to clean them up without disturbing the idle mixture settings. If they are like my '98 Johnny 150HPV6 carbs, the side cover comes off and you can spray the idle mixture needle clean w/o removing it. Remember it is tricky to synch 6 carbs.

try the seafoam treatment and see if she improves. There are some air jets open to the air, They can get some dirt in them as well. Remove the airbox and give 'em a good spray of carb cleaner. Maybe you will fix it.
