I took my boat out today for the first time this season, and had trouble getting it started. I started it a couple weeks ago for the first time and it fired right away.
My first question is: What is the red toggle switch on the front of the engine? It looks like it is part of the fuel system....what position is it supposed to be in?
It appeared that the engine was flooding out pretty quickly. It tried to fire at first then didnt want to fire until I let it sit a few minutes. If I pump the primer up, it gets hard but if I crank it over and it doesnt fire, it gets soft again.....is this normal?
I was choking the engine(pushing the key in) for the most part while on the lake...never got it started. I brought the boat home, pulled the plugs and cleaned them off with some fire and put them back in(plugs were new last fall and looked good)
It still was giving me trouble so I cooked some steaks and drank a couple beers and then went over to the boat and tried it with no choke and I got it to start up finally. It smoked for a short minute, with some oily sludge coming out of the exhaust for a few seconds. Then it started running good. I let it idle for a while, then put it in N and ran it up to 5000 rpms and everything seemed good. I started it twice since then and it fired right up.
Im taking it back to the lake tomorrow...Any ideas on what I may have going on? Is that red toggle having anything to do with my problems, or does anyone have any ideas for me to check out.
Thanks! and Happy Boating!
