I have a 1996 Johnson 8 HP 4 stroke, rope start tiller. Model Number HJ8FREDC.
This thing is driving me crazy. When I run it in a trash can, runs great at the house, even put into forward and reverse, also throttle up half speed, everything good in the tank, idles well, even can be adjusted to run good at really low idle. Run it for over 30 minutes one day to make sure it was well into operating temperature. All checks good, went fishing the next day and motor ran fine to the first fishing area (@10 min trip at low speed/headway idle). Then when starting back up and under power the motor just dies (@20 mins fishing in one spot). I've noticed sometimes it stops when running into thick grass/lili pads that gather up infront of the motor. It's struggling a little to push thorough the grass/pads then it starts to die. Can it be something to do with the resistance on the prop/fwd motion vs. the engine rotation, like some soft of shutoff component? I don't believe so. The water pump is still operating and tell-tale is strong also not overheating, not that there is a warning sound or high temp shutoff on this small motor.
After getting into this shutdown condition the motor is impossible to get to run for more than a few feet. I make sure the bulb is tight, the only way to get it to fire up is to pull the choke out till it sputters, then close the choke and put throttle all the way open then fire back to life. Have to shift into fwd gear with a little throttle on it or it will die. This is a hard shift and I don't want to do this because of potential lower unit damage. Have to repeat this same process, while getting a sore arm from all the rope pulling, and boat only traveling about 10 feet at a time before it dies again. This is not the way to get back to a boat ramp in the wind that for's sure.
Seems to me that it's got to be a fuel problem but i have rebuilt the fuel pump with a kit and the carb has been serviced at a mechanic shop and I have also taken it apart and verified all openings are clear.
Where do I start, i've had this thing apart three times now and when put back together all works well at home in the tank, then like almost everyone on here when under load or WOT the thing falls dead on it's face.
I haven't tested the compression or spark but it was checked when put in the shop, the mechanic wrote down good compression, good spark on the paperwork.
I don't think the plugs have been replaced in a while, could that cause this issue or something else be the cause? I did notice last time it happend a few sputtering back through the carb that I didn't hear the other times this happened during previous trips. Flooding maybe?
Appreciate any ideas from the experts before I put it in the shop again and pay money for something that may not solve the problem.
