I am about to work on a 1996 Johnson 175 HP V6. I am not familiar with these engines for I normally work on diesel
engines and inboard engines. But I gathered that
the ignition systems are fundamentally similar.

I was told that the engine had the power packs replaced, power coils replaced, stator replaced, optical sensor replaced, and fly wheel replaced. I was told that it still had no spark. I am trying to get more info on troubleshooting
the ignition system components.

I have an inline spark tester that I will hook up to and confirm no spark. I have a Fluke meter that I will use to confirm output voltages, and I have a battery load tester to test the battery.

I am just looking for more things specific to this engine that I can check. I know that there are certain switches like (shift switch) to look out for. But being unfamiliar with these engines just asking for anything else I can check.

thanks in advanced.

Does it have a lanyard switch on it? If so is it connected? Has the ignition switch been checked?

Outboards make their spark without battery voltage, except some models use battery voltage when cranking motor to start it. In general, the spinning flywheel magnets induce a voltage in the stator coil. This voltage charges the capacitors in the powerpack. When the optical sensor detects the need to fire a spark plug, the voltage is sent to the coil

I would recommend you look at a wiring diagram. That motor likely had battery voltage at the powerpack when the motor is cranking. Also, she likely has a shift assist switch that kills 1/2 the spark, when shifting.

The black/yellow and black/orange wires are the spark killer wires.
