1996 Johnson Fast Strike 150 HP

I have a 1996 Johnson Fast Strike 150 HP mod #J150GLEVE. I am have an issue after cold start and I believe it is a flooding issue but I will let y’all decide. After performing the normal cold start procedure on the motor and backing it off the trailer I will let the motor idle while parking truck or etc. Sometimes the motor will be dead when I return to the boat or sometimes I can be idling away from the launch and it will die, not spit and sputter out, it will just die like you hit the kill switch. You can smell gas coming from the motor. Once trying to start the motor again for a while it will crank back up and run the rest of the day without one single issue. It is only on the initial start up that it does this. I rebuilt all 6 carbs in the past 6 months and motor continues to do the same thing. Primer solenoid seems to be clicking but I was kind of leaning toward it maybe leaking more than enough fuel by on the initial start because once the motor is warm I do not have to use the choke the rest of the day. Any ideas?

Put the red lever in the run position (up). Pump the primer bulb, and hold in the key while cranking for cold starts. If smelling gas, check the valve and fuel lines. Gas on the body of the valve would likely mean a torn gasket.

Thanks for the reply. The valve on the solenoid is always inline with the body of the solenoid and the mentioned method of cold starting is how I normally cold start the motor. The gasket you are talking about leaking is the one on the top of the choke solenoid? I don’t normally smell the fuel until the motor has died but then it is very strong. I haven’t noticed any leaking fuel on any of the fuel lines or connections on the front of the motor.

See #47. Can't rule out ignition issues resulting in unburned fuel, at least not without some testing. Spark and compression tests are pretty standard first steps. (Use an adjustable open air spark tester -- idea to is measure spark. You should see about 1/2". Measure spark and compression with all plugs removed.)

Remove the 2 wee hoses from the electric primer cover.-------Operate the primer bulb.------Does fuel come out of the 2 nipples on the cover , yes or no ?
