Hi. I had a lot of troubles with a Johnson 130HP, 1996, newly rebuilt engine that came with my 20? boat. No idle, weak spark and sometimes no spark.
I changed the stator, the wiring from the engine to the control, plugs, plug wires, and so on... I still had weak spark and difficulty in getting idle. I managed to use the boat with super or plus gas (higher octaneges). As I was playing with the carbs while in the water, I got a nice idle. (Boat does not have rpm gauge. I heard a nice engine noise at low rpms). Problems like engine dying kept happening and I storage the boat.
One day I found the same engine at a swap shop bought and began changing parts.
First problem to solve: weak spark. I changed the fly wheel, stator, and something round that goes under or inside the stator. Spark did not improve. I changed the CDI and great sparks. The CDI was the problem.
I turned the engine on for a short period of time and it seems to be working nicely. I did not do a full test or took it to the water.
Then, I changed the 4 carbs, but I forgot to check and cleaned the old carbs. After that, I began having idle problems.
Currently engine has great spark, starts, but no idle. As I release the gas, most of the times rev goes down, but very erratic, and it coughs once every 4 seconds.
I clean all carbs in and out and install them again. Nothing changed.
While looking for solutions, I decided to check all hoses and connectors. I found only one connector or valve clogged. This is the one going into the bottom left cylinder (looking at the heads). I tried to clean it but I could not.
How can I clean the clogged valve or connector entering into the cylinder? Any ideas of how to get an idle again? Why caughs?
