I have a 1996 60 horse, 2 stroke mercury -model 10604- serial# og297739. It is knocking and tempo of knock increases with rpm. I have been told that some years of merc were built with "closed seal" making access for repair nearly impossible. Anyone know if this is the case? Any suggestions? Thanks. Perry

Hummm...... They offer replacement pistons so a total rebuild must be possible. Besides, someone had to assemble it to start with.

All kidding aside, some motors were produced without a removeable head so the access is somewhat more difficult but not impossible.

Good luck!

So, Dhadley...

I am now in the predicament of either having some work done on said motor, or I am also looking at a rebuilt 80 horse merc. Judging by the knocking sound I have described (and considering the increased difficulty in accessing the 60) what would you say I would be looking at to fix the 60? I am more adept at putting out a fire than I am at fixing a motor...

Thanks for the response. Perry mfirefish@hotmail.com
