Just noticed I have gearcase oil dripping out of my water intake screen on lower unit. Boat is on lift and normally foot is down. Left foot in trailer position for a week and this is first sign of leak. Unit leaked out half of the resevoir gear lube atop the engine in one week (about 4 oz). Just purchased vessel, but clean lube (no water) and no signs of leak for past 3 weeks. Before I drag her back and pull the outdrive, I am looking for suggestions on common failures that can cause similar symptoms. Outdrive has new boots and gaskets in upper drive. No signs of any other leaks. Any suggestions Appreciated.

It sounds like a seal leak from under the water pump. You can also reach behind the drive and try to feel the drive shaft to see if it is running down from the upper.Seals commonly have to be replaced sooner or later.you are lucky that no water has sucked into the drive.I would pull the drive and have it pressure and vacuum tested.Sometimes you get a better deal if you have the whole drive resealed rather then just one. Dont know if you still have the same drive but their was a problem awhile back... Drive

Also if your loosing oil where you say lots of times it because you have a bad seal in the upper part of the drive. my thoughts only.
