I have a puffing sound coming from my motor.......it is coming from what looks like a drain fitting located on the bottom starboard side right underneath of the starter. It seems to be spitting out air and some water. there is nothing attached to this but it looks like there should be a hose or something. I can hold my finger over it . there is very little pressure. can anyone steer me in the right direction?
thanks

Take your SR# and go to Mercury Parts Express.Com and look. What you are describing should be your poppit valve assembly. There is a vent hole in the cover (figure 8) and , yes, there is usually a hose coming down to it from the top of the block, behind the flywheel. You need an OEM manual and find out what is supposed to be there as Merc has a way of moving and changing things around in different models.

Gary.... thanks for the response . This not the poppit valve. I did follow the hose from the top of the block down to the poppit and all is there and connected and the motor pumps water well..What i am refering to is a barbed brass fittting at the same level as the poppit valve but twords the front of the motor.................directly under the starter. I could not find any pictures of it on the merc schematic........unless it is part of what is referd to as the drain system..........any ideas??
thanks

Could it be the one-way check valve that normally supplies pressure to the remote oil tank via an air hose?

Re: 1996 mercury 150.....gismo

please tell me more.......this is an I/O to outboard conversion i have just completed..........so i now very little about outboards...........I do have a remote oil tank i mounted and have run the double (two) hoses to the motor.....there does not seem to be anyplace to attach an air pressure hose but the fitting i am talking about here does have a small amount of air pumping out of it.......the powerhead is new so i have been running a mix in the gas tank but sure would like to figure this out so i don't fry the motor from lack of oil........

thanks again for any info

Do you suppose that fitting supplies pressure to the remote oil tank to force oil up to the engine? A service manual would certainly ensure you get the system functioning properly. Oil from that tank cannot run uphill without being pumped.

My suggestion would be to get the OEM service manual for your particular motor. If you don't know how the oil system works, what else are you missing that could cost you a motor? ? ? ? Is the oil pump adjusted right :%
