1996 mercury outboard

hi did the impeller waterpump gasket change and even had the local ob maniac check it for me. and now water is coming up thru the gear selector on the lower leg big time.
is this normal? the mec said they need silicone to stop this happening is this correct. if so it dident work. mabey they dident wait for it to set before testing the water flow..
any ideas at all? thanks

That is crap. It sounds like you did not properly install the water tube when you reinstalled the gearcase. Drop it again. Inspect or replace the seal in the bottom of the water tube receiver on the water pump cover. Install the white plastic watertube gulde into the water tube receiver. Check/replace the exhaust gasket in the gearcase behind the water pump.

Now install the gearcase (Motor control and gearcase in neutral), making sure the water tube is placed in the water tube guide.
